Malhargad Fort is an ancient hill fortress which is located in Saswad city in the state of Maharashtra. It is almost 30 km away from Pune. The geographical coordinate of the site is latitude 18°24`44?N 74°2`56?E. The village of Sonori is situated at the base of the fort. Thus Malhargad is also known as Sonori Fort. This was the last structure constructed under the rule of the Maratha Empire around 1775. Malhargad Fort is named after the Hindu god Malhari. It is located on the Bhuleshwar range of the Sahyadris Mountain Range.


Malhargad Fort was founded by a Peshwa Sardar named Krishnaji Madhavrao Panse and Bhivrao Yashvant. It was established between 1757 and 1760 and was mainly utilized to maintain watch on Dive ghat. There are two temples in the premise of the fortress. The larger temple is devoted to Lord Shiva (Mahadev) and the smaller shrine is dedicated to Lord Khandoba. The structure offers a panoramic view and the city of Parvati and Jejuri can be clearly viewed from the top of Malhargad. Many other forts like Vajragad Fort, Purandar Fort and Sinhagad Fort can also be viewed from the site.
