Mala is a kind of substance that can be only removed by action according to Shaiva Siddhanta. Knowledge of its presence is not adequate. Mala is likened to a visual force mere awareness of whose presence does not impair its effects and whose removal requires the action of the instrument of a surgeon.

The only actions that can remove it are the initiation rituals and their sequels taught by Lord Shiva in the Tantric scriptures. Shiva creates the universe for the sake of bound souls who need spheres of experience in which they may be freed from Mala and karma. Mala provides an answer to the question of why human beings have karma and are bound to rebirth. The Shiva worshippers believe that Lord Shiva is the sole reality and that all apparent differences are included in his being, basic Mala is the limited state of awareness that is normal personality.

Mala is also applied to the appearance of reality as diversified into subjects and objects. Karma-Mala is a belief which says that the true self is conditioned by the moral quality of one`s actions.
