Maladhar Basu is one of the early narrative poets of West Bengal. He was born in Kulingram in Burdhaman district. He has served Hussain Shah who was the King of Gauda as his adviser. Srikrishnavijay is his famous work that was composed between 1473 and 1480. It is a long poem that is a translation of the 10th and 11th cantos of the Sanskrit Srimad Bhagavad. It was composed with the aim to safeguard Hinduism against the increasing influence of Islam. This poem focuses on Krishna`s divine life. The 10th canto speaks about the legends of Lord Krishna as a child and his tryst with the gopis in Vrindavan.
He is credited to have popularised Bhagavata in Bengal before Sri Chaitanya. He was bestowed the title Gunaraj Khan by Rukunuddin Barbak Shah.
