Ludhiana District is one of the five districts of Punjab constituting the Patiala Division. The district headquarters Ludhiana is considered as the industrial hub of Punjab.

Ludhiana District, PunjabLudhiana District is the most centrally located district which falls in the Malwa region of Punjab. It has its administrative headquarters located at Punjab. For administrative purposes it has been placed in Patiala Division. Total geographical area of Ludhiana District is 3767 sq kms. The total population of the district as per 2001 census is 3030352 (Rural population is 1339566 and Urban population is 1690786). Population density of the district is 804 persons per sq kms. Ludhiana District provides proper educational and healthcare facilities to the people. Besides these, the economy of the state is primary dependent on its industries. The main industries of Ludhiana District are of bicycle parts and hosiery.

Location of Ludhiana District
Ludhiana District lies between North Latitude 30 degree 34 minutes and 31 degree 1 minute and East Longitude 75 degree 18 minutes and 76 degree 20 minutes. This is bounded on the north by Sutlej River which separates it from Jalandhar district. This river also forms its northern boundary with Hoshiarpur District. On other sides it shares common boundaries with Rupnagar district in the east, Moga district in the west, and Sangrur and Patiala districts in the south and south east respectively.

History of Ludhiana District
Ludhiana was founded in the time of Lodhi dynasty which ruled in Delhi from 1451-1526 AD. Legend suggests that two Lodhi chiefs Yusaf Khan and Nihand Khan were deputed by Sikandar Lodhi (1489-1517 AD) to restore order in this region. They camped at the site of present city of Ludhiana which was then a village called Mir Hota. Yusaf Khan went across Sutlej River in Jalandhar Doab to check Khokhars who were plundering the Doab and made a settlement at Sultanpur while Nihand Khan stayed back and founded the present city at the site of village Mir Hota. The new town was originally known as `Lodhi-ana`, which means the town of Lodi`s. The name later changed to its present name Ludhiana.

Geography of Ludhiana District is typical representative of an alluvial plain; it owes its origin to the aggravation work of Sutlej River. The alluvium deposited by the river has been worked over by the wind which gave rise to a number of small dunes and sand mounds. Most of these dunes have been levelled by the brave hard working agriculturists of the district. Geography of Ludhiana District can be divided into two regions - flood plain of the Sutlej and upland plains. The climate of Ludhiana District is characterized by dryness except a brief spell of monsoon season in a very hot summer and a bracing winter. The cold season is from middle of November to the early part of March. The succeeding period up to the end of June is the hot season. July, August and half of September constitute the south west monsoon, the period between mid of September to the mid of November is termed as post monsoon or transitional period. June is generally the hottest month. December and January are the coldest months. The rainfall in the district increases from south west towards the north east. About 70 percent of the rainfall is received during the period July to September. The rainfall during December to March accounts for 16 percent of the total rainfall and the remaining 14 percent rainfall is received in the other months of the year. Sutlej River and its tributary, the Budha Nallah constitutes the chief hydrographic features of Ludhiana District.

Administration of Ludhiana District
Administration of Ludhiana District is headed by Deputy Commissioner. It comprises seven sub-divisions or Tehsils, six Sub-Tehsils and 12 development blocks. Administrative set-up of Ludhiana District has 11 towns and 915 villages. 896 villages are inhabited and 19 uninhabited.
