Lotus Mahal, also called, Chitragani Mahal and Kamal Mahal, is located in the Zenana enclosure of Hampi. It was built in the Indo-Islamic style. It is believed that the royal women used to come here to mingle during evening.

The Lotus Mahal is one of the beautiful tourist sites of the Hampi. It has a very typical architecture that can be only found in Hampi. It is located inside the Zenana enclosure. It is believed that the royal women used to come and socialize inside the Lotus Mahal.

It is also known by two other names, Kamal Mahal and Chitragani Mahal. It falls under Non-religious or secular category structure of Hampi. The beautiful structure and architecture is left undamaged during the annexation of this city. However, there are still few of the mutilation signs on the few sculptures placed on outer surface. The Lotus Mahal is build out of bricks and lime mortar composition. The shape of the place makes it very evident of its name. The balcony and archways have a dome type construction that resembles a bud of open lotus.

Architecture of the Lotus Mahal
The structure of the Lotus Mahal consists of a two storey with open base floor. There are sidewalks which have tall arched windows. There are balconies at the upper floors with the arched windows. There is also structure that looks like hook made on the walls closer to windows with the purpose of hanging curtains. The ground floor arches are recessed and ornate. The decorations and architecture is a curios amalgamation of the Islamic and Hindu styles. The Islamic style arches and hindu style multi player base and roof structure are quoted often for the Ingenuity of Vijayanagara artisans.

Tourism in Lotus Mahal
The night illumination of the Lotus Mahal offers a spectacular sight. There is a belief that the palace was air cooled that maintained the temperatures during the summer season. The pipeline work between and above the arches is a proof for this. It is one of the photogenic historical building undoubtedly especially at Hampi. There is also a lawn around the Lotus Mahal available for resting outdoors.
