Lota Dance, Folk Dance of Madhya PradeshLota dance is a folk dance popular in the Madhya Pradesh state of India. The Lota dance is performed by the womenfolk of the Banjaras. In this dance they place a series of pitchers filled with water one on top while the other balancing on their hands.

Performance of Lota Dance
The dance is performed by women in a group. The folk dance is tribal in nature and features some wonderful dance movements. While dancing, the performers quite artistically balance big-size metal pots on their heads and swing in a liner or a circular formation. Occasionally, the males accompany the female dancers either with songs or musical instruments.

The women also perform another group dance known as the Saundarya (beauty) dance. In this dance they form two rows facing each other. While dancing they reach out and grasp each other`s hands moving back and forth and singing all the while.

Costume of Lota Dance
The costume of Lota dance is vibrant and heavy. The participants of this dance decorate themselves with heavy silver jewellery like necklaces, bangles, ear rings etc. They wear colourful clothes of contrasting embroidery and tiny inset of scintillating mirrors.
