Libraries in Delhi are the repertoires of vast knowledge base covering all possible subjects. They form a significant part of the society and illuminate the cultural heritage of the country. These greatly serve the people belonging to all professions including the students, officials, research scholars and others and provide them a world of knowledge. Libraries in Delhi are also widely used by the common people, to have an enriching leisure time. Established ages ago, the collection of the libraries have been enhanced over years through the contribution of various organizations as well personalities.
American Library
American Library is located in the commercial hub of New Delhi, inside the office of US government officials in India, called the American Centre. The library is under the administration of the American Embassy. It was established in the year 1951 for promoting understanding among the people of the United States and North India. The collection of the library comprises books associated with the American constitution, American culture, American politics and American society and is accessible by the researchers, teachers, students and general public. It also hosts cultural events and discussions related to the current affairs and American society.
Delhi Public Library
Delhi Public Library was founded in the year 1951 in the form of a pilot project sponsored by UNESCO and the Government of India. It is a national depository library and serves through more than 35 branches across Delhi. It houses a collection of over 18 Lakh book in languages like Hindi, English, Punjabi, Urdu and others. There are also separate sections for children and a Braile library for the visually impaired. It also has a prison library for Tihar Central Prison.
Dr. Vijay Pal Memorial Libraries
Dr. Vijay Pal Memorial Libraries are owned by a charitable institution called Dr. Vijay Pal Memorial Society which is registered under the Societies Registration Act and the Income Tax Act. Presently two public libraries, a reference library and a general library, are run by the society. The general library was established in the year 1975 while the reference library was opened in 1993. Both the libraries can be conveniently accessed by the common people.
Library of Amartya
Library of Amartya stands in southern part of Delhi. The collection of this library mostly comprises `learn to read books` and those associated with advanced studies in chemistry and physics. The library provides a free membership.
National Medical Library
National Medical Library, situated near Ansari Nagar, was setup on 1st April 1966 by the Government of India for providing a rich knowledge base to the health science professionals of the country. It houses about 3.6 lakh volumes of books, journals, reports and other reading materials. Around 2000 periodicals are subscribed by the library annually. A fine collection of 19th century literature can also be found in the library. Since the year 1980, training programs are also organised by the library for medical or health science professionals.
Nehru Memorial Museum and Library
Nehru Memorial Museum and Library has been established to reconstruct and preserve the Indian independence movement. This autonomous institution was established in 1964 and functions under the Indian Ministry of Culture. It is an excellent centre for academic research on modern as well as contemporary history. Many resources of the library have been digitalized and its historical documents and manuscripts are available online.
