Legend of Parvati and Lord ShivaThe legend of Parvati and Lord Shiva relates to the story of the later taunting the deity. Once Shiva and Parvati were talking to each other when Shiva jokingly told Parvati that he looked so beautiful while she was dark complexioned and when she hugged him it appeared as if a serpent was coiling round a sandal tree. Having being addressed in such a rude manner Parvati, who was then hugging her husband, left him and became very furious. Her eyes turned red with rage and she said that one derides others through one`s own fault and such a person is sure to meet with adverse situations. She became very depressed being mocked by her husband and thought that she must perform severe austerities. Parvati then proceeded to the forest to practise austerities and to end her life there to get relieved of such a cunning husband.

Shiva upon hearing her words tried to console Parvati but she did not relent and left the abode of her husband. Finally Lord Brahman intervened in the matter and changed the complexion of Parvati. She was then named as Gauri. It immediately solved their fight and the divine couple lived happily thereafter.
