Lalchand Rajput, born on December 18, 1961, in Mumbai of Maharashtra, is a former Indian cricketer, who was a right-handed batsman. As far as an educational qualification is concerned, he is an MBA, and works with the prestigious Tata Forbes. Lalchand Rajput has represented India in two Tests and 4 One-Day Internationals, from 1985-87. Lalchand Rajput had an illustrious vocation as the opening batsman for Mumbai. He also became the manager of Indian cricket team for a short period. Lalchand Rajput is still involved with administration of cricket for last few years and even held designation in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
With Sunil Gavaskar expressing his will to serve in the lower rank of the batting order, during the mid 1980s, there arose a need for fetching out appropriate opening batsmen. Meanwhile, Lalchand Rajput, who had hit the headlines with some fascinating feats in domestic cricket, was reckoned as a viable alternative. Rajput got the chance to cast himself in One Day Internationals (ODI). The ODI between India and England at Nagpur on January 23, 1985, happened to be his ODI debut. He grabbed the important catch of PR Downton, but he couldn`t score a single run. He was still selected for the Sri Lanka tour in August-September 1985. Rajput with his well-founded grip, fared considerably well in his Test debut. He landed up with a 32 and 61, thereby contributing 76 runs at a stand of the third wicket with Dilip Vengsarkar in the 2nd innings.
However, his poor performance in the following Test virtually ended all hopes for him. He could grab meager scores, which welcomed Ravi Shastri to substitute Lalchand Rajput. Therefore the Sri Lanka vs. India Test at Colombo, on September 1985, was last the Test for Rajput. His last ODI appearance in the India vs. Pakistan match was also held at Nagpur. In the 110 first-class matches, that Rajput has played, he has bagged a fairly good total of 7988 runs, at a high average of 49.30. Hence, first-class cricket was definitely his comfort-zone.
Lalchand Rajput was given the assignment of being Team India`s Manager in the Twenty20 World Championship 2007, in September, in South Africa. Lalachand Rajput sincerely tried to favour his team as far as possible, and still now he is executing his present responsibility as a manager with utmost dutifulness. Rajput was also the coach for the Mumbai Indians Team in the 2008 season of the Indian Premier League.
