Lakshya, Indian FilmThe Indian film, Lakshya is the second film by Farhan Akhtar. After the success of Dil Chahta Hain there was much expectation from the director and he fulfilled many of it successfully. It is a fictional story based on the historical events of the 1999 Kargil Conflict. Farhan Akhtar serves a product that is exceptionally strong on form and high on production value. He is one of those few directors who have the skill to infuse realistic elements into a film without compromising on the entertainment value. In Farhan`s own words, Lakshya is not about Kargil war. But it is a movie about a wayward young man finding direction and sense of purpose to his life. The main subject of the movie deals with the maturing of a confused son of an affluent businessman into a man with clear aim in life.

Plot of Lakshya
Intensely individualistic and pioneering in its fusion of a social conscience with fiction, the movie Lakshya chronicles the journey of an aimless young man, to an army officer. The story focuses on the life of Karan Shergill played by Hrithik Roshan who has no goals for his future. The title Lakshya means "objective" or "aim" and the central character Karan is an upper middle-class young man with no real aim in life until, on a whim after watching an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, he decides to join the Indian Army. Eventually, he finds himself involved with his Punjabi Regiment in the Kargil War of 1999, when Pakistani forces crossed the LOC (Line of Control) in partitioned Kashmir. With the Pakistanis occupying one of the peaks and shelling an Indian highway, Karan finds his aim which is to plant the Indian flag on top of the peak. The narrative utilises a flashback structure so that the audiences can meet the young officer first and then discover how he got there.

Priety Zinta"s character as the TV journalist Romila Dutta, who was once Karan"s girlfriend but ended up breaking up with him because of his un-ambitious nature is a perfect foil to Hrithik"s intensive introspective performance. The film also features other extremely talented actors like Om Puri, Lilette Dubey and specially Amitabh Bachchan in glorified cameos. Boman Irani`s comparatively more spacious part as Hrithik`s father is commendable. The father-son conflict, like the love story between the two lead protagonists, is woven into the battle with free-flowing facility.

There is no denying that the battle scenes and the special rock-climbing operation are brilliantly picturized. The research work gives the film its authenticity. The movie ends with Romi and Karan coming together and agreeing to marry with their parent`s consent.
