It is located 28 km towards south from Haridwar, between the towns of Khanpur and Sultanpur. Laksar has an average elevation of 227 metres (745 feet). Other towns in the neighbourhood of Laksar are Pathri, Jabarhera and Roorkee.

Laksar is an important sugar manufacturing destination in the state and also known for the Laksar Junction Railway station, which is the largest Railway Junction in the state, built in 1866.

As per the Indian census report of 2001, Laksar had a population of 18, 240. Males account for 54% of the population and females account for 46% of the population. In Laksar, 15% of the population is les than 6 years of age. The average literacy rate of Laksar is 68%, which is higher than the national average literacy rate, which is 59.5%. Out of it, the male literacy rate is 75% and the female literacy rate is 59%.
