Set up in 1956 in New Delhi by the late Shri Ram in commemoration of his wife Phoolan Devi, the college had a humble beginning. History of Lady Shri Ram College for Women
It began in a school building in Daryaganj, Central Delhi with only nine faculty members, four supporting staffs and two hundred and forty three students. Only three distinct courses were taught at that time. At present, this college is situated in a wonderful campus in South Delhi encircling a total area of fifteen acres of land. Presently about two thousand students have enrolled their names in sixteen courses. A team of more than one hundred and fifty efficient teachers, administrative and supporting staffs help them. A Board of Directors has been formed with members from various fields like industry, law, journalism, academics and bureaucracy. Dr. Bharat Ram chairs the board.

Extra-Curricular Activities of Lady Shri Ram College
Workshops, seminars, debates are part and parcel of the culture of Lady Shri Ram College. Tarang is an annual festival of the College that is celebrated with lots of jubilance and enthusiasm. A Students` Union has been created for initiating, planning and coordinating all cultural events within the college premises. The Union, together with the Admission Committee, supervised admission procedure wholly and sought talents for their annual fest. Other societies include the English debating society, Hindi debating and creative writing society, the Indian music society, National Cadet Corps, National Sports Organisation or the N.S.O, Dhyana, the academic forum, women`s development cell, the Western music society, quiz society, the voluntary agency placement cell, the society for the promotion of Indian classical music amongst youth (Spicmacay), Prakriti or the environment society, dance society, the dramatics society project (film and photography), expressions, hive (fine arts society), information cells. In this way Lady Shri Ram College offers the scope for developing critical thinking and nurture their creative faculty.

Courses Offered by Lady Shri Ram College
Being one of the finest institutes for social sciences, Arts and Commerce Lady Shri Ram College for Women offers undergraduate courses on subjects like English, Economics, Hindi, History, Journalism, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physical Education, Political Science, Psychology, Sanskrit, Sociology and Statistics. One also can seek admission in postgraduate courses, in various subjects like Commerce, English, Hindi, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sanskrit and Statistics. A unique course named Postgraduate Diploma course in Conflict Transformation and Peace Building is also offered. It addresses a rising need for education on the prototypes, models and skills that can help societies to stop conflicts in a non-violent manner.

This two years Diploma Course is an integrated programme. Undergraduate and graduate students, NGO workers, media persons and grassroots workers are eligible candidates for this course. In order to take an interdisciplinary stance it draws on resources from various subjects like sociology, political science, media studies and psychology. The entire course incorporates interactive classes, `combining lectures, case studies, panel and group discussions`, conferences, role-acting, excursions, film showings and also conversations with scholarly people. All the scholarly teachers of Lady Shri Ram College and the experienced teachers from other educational institutes serve as faculty of this course. For science students B.Sc. Programme in Statistics is also offered.

Lady Shri Ram College for Women, in a nutshell, nicely incorporates academic excellence with promotion of extra curricular activities. Keeping in mind the noble objective of promoting extracurricular activities alongside education, various societies have formed in Lady Shri Ram College. Society REACH, an ellipsis for Reaffirming Equity, Access, Capacity and Humanism, was formed in 2002 with the help of the organisation `Foundation for Academic Excellence and Access (FAEA). REACH acts as a changing agent that empowers students and creates access and opportunities. By giving scholarships to prospective students and employing in experimental activities like workshops, training programs and field trips, REACH offers dialogue and several activities for spurring youths in their endeavours and at the same time inculcates a spirit of leadership in them.
