Kushinagara was one of the sixteen countries of ancient India. It is located in Kasia about 50 kilometers from the northeast of Sahanka. It is the place where Buddha died. Kushinagara is described as the place where Buddha attained nirvana. It is said that after fifty years of teaching and preaching, Buddha asked that a couch be prepared for him at Kusinagara and he wished to depart between two flowering sala trees and he started his last journey. It was atKushinagara that he lay down on the couch and rested his head on his hand and took his eternal rest. Before his death he asked his disciples to follow his example.
Places of Interest
The Nirvana Temple which was built in the 5th century AD, contains a reclining statue, 7 m/25 ft long, which shows the Buddha in his state of final repose as he died.
