In the epic Ramayana it is mentioned that Kusha is one of the twin sons of Lord Rama and Sita. The other son is the Lava. Kusha was born in the Forest after Sita had been banished from Ayodhya. Both the twin brothers Lava and Kusha were educated and trained in military skills and were under the care of Sage Valmiki.

When lord Rama executed the Ashvamedha Yajna, then they challenged their father. Rama was at this point unknown to them. When Rama found out their identity, he took them back to Ayodhya. Kusha built Kusasthali, on the brow of the Vindhya, the capital of Kosala. The Raghuvansa describes Kusa as returning from Kusavati to Ayodhya, after his father`s death. But it seems not unlikely that the extending power of the princes of the Doab, of the lunar family, compelled Rama`s posterity to retire more to the west and south.
