As per Jain tradition Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, was born at Kundagram and Vaniyagrama was his residence. Both the places were either part of or near to Vaishali in Bihar. He was an apostle of non-violence, who preached the observance of chastity, penance, contemplations and self-mortification. He attained enlightenment under a Shaal Tree and went on to found Jainism, a major religious sect in India.

Birth of Lord Mahavira
Lord Mahavir was born to the king of Kundagram, Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. His birth brought good fortune for the entire kingdom and so his father named him "Vardhamana, meaning one that flourishes endlessly. As a child he was very courageous and showed aversion to worldly affairs and inclination towards religious affairs.

Attainments of Lord Mahavira
He succeeded in attaining complete control over carnal self. He acquired the status of Digambar Muni in Vaishali"s Kundagram. Gyatkhand Park is the place where he shed all his clothes and ornaments while continuously reciting the mantra, "Om Namah Siddhebhayah". He delivered his first speech on Dharma near Rajgir on Vipulachala Hill. "Live and Let others Live" is the main motto of Jainism.
