Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Sanctuary in RajasthanThe Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary covers 578 sq km (223 sq miles) of the Aravalli Hills, west of the fort, on the leeward side. Panther, flying squirrel, wolf and many bird species can be seen here. The Kumbhalgarh Sanctuary will come as a surprise to those who see Rajasthan only as a desert state. These green tracts form the dividing line between the former states of Mewar and Marwar.

Transportations are easily available from Udaipur to arrive at the sanctuary. Covering an area of 578 kilometers Kumbhalgarh Park is a popular with the tourists as a part of the excursion tour from Udaipur. Kumbhalgarh is actually famous for its fort. The same name was retained for the park too so that people can have no difficulty in identifying the location of the wildlife sanctuary. The park lies beside the massive Kumbhalgarh Fort. Broadening across the Aravalli Range, Kumbhalgarh sanctuary covers parts of Rajsamand, Udaipur and Pali districts. The sanctuary makes home to many endangered species of wild-life. The sanctuary provides natural abode to many creatures like Wolf, Leopards, Sloth bear, Hyena, jackal, Jungle cat, Sambhar, Nilgai, Chausingha (the four horned antelope), Chinkara and Hare. History of Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary
Once the hunting grounds of royals, this area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1971. The diverse topography of the sanctuary adds to its charms. In its eastern part are ranges that loom over 3,478 ft, as well as the source of the River Banas. The Marwar plains are to the north-west of the sanctuary. The rainwater on the western slopes flows as small rivers such as Sukdi, Mithdi, Sumer and Kot, all of which are the tributaries of River Luni that ultimately merges into the Arabian Sea.

This sanctuary inhabits more than forty wolves in number. In the summers, one can easily find pack of wolves strolling around water sources in the sanctuary. Bird watchers can see a nice variety of birds too in vibrant hues. In the park, one can see Grey Jungle Fowl, which is usually inhibited. Peacocks and Doves also gain attention by their own charm. Apart from this, birds like Red Spur Owls, Parakeets, Golden Oriole, Bulbul, Dove, Grey Pigeons and White Breasted Kingfisher are traceable near the water holes. Rajasthan is famous for peacocks. If its monsoon one can surely catch a glimpse of this amazing bird with its feathers spread out. The travelers will come across wild animals such as like wolves, hyena, leopards, jackal, sloth bear, jungle cat, nilgai, chinkara, sambhar, chausingha and hare.

It is connected to important cities of India like Delhi and Mumbai through regular flights. The nearest railhead is also located at Udaipur. Trains are available from Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Jaipur. Kumbhalgarh is easily reachable from Udaipur which is about 90 kilometres off. One can take the services of regular buses that start from Udaipur, and can also hire private taxis to visit this sanctuary.
