In the epic Mahabharata it is stated that Kripi is the wife of Drona and mother of Ashwatthama. Kripi is the twin sister of Kripa. She is the daughter of Sharadvan and Janapadi.

There is a mythical story related to the birth of Kripi. Lord Indra was frightened with sage Sharadvan as he was a great archer and through his meditation has attended proficiency in the art of all types of warfare. Indra had sent an Apsara Janapadi to tempt Sharadvan. Sharadvan could not control himself and his semen fell on some weeds. From there two children were born to the sage in a tuft of grass. Sharadvan upset with his action, left his hermitage and went to jungle for reparation. King Santanu found the two children and brought them up out of compassion (kripa) and named them Kripa and Kripi.
