Kotagarh Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Baliguda subdivision of Kandhamal district in the East Indian state Odisha, is an ideal place to relish the nature`s bounty and captivating wilderness. It is the home to diverse species of flora and fauna. It spans over a vast area of 400 square kilometres and is one of the most important wildlife reserves of the state. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1981.

Various schemes have been implemented by the Government of Odisha for enhancing the population of wild animals in the region. The place is under constant research work and efforts like plantation of trees, application of healthy breeding programs and making annual reports have helped greatly in improving the condition of the sanctuary. Tribal villages surround the sanctuary, which are inhabited by the people of Kondh and Desia communities.

Flora of Kotagarh Wildlife Sanctuary
Kotagarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a paradise for nature lovers as it hosts a plethora of plants as well as wild animals. Dense deciduous forests along with grasslands comprise the main vegetation of the sanctuary. The place is draped in lush greenery and a tranquil ambience hovers around making it an ideal destination for spending an invigorating time. The flora is highly variegated. Around 650 plant species have been recorded here which includes gymnosperms, bryophytes, pteridophytes, angiosperms, fungi and lichens. Dominant plants of the sanctuary enlist Kochila, Dhaura, Char, Arjuna, Bheru, Salapo, Jamun, Kangada, Jackfruit, Mango, Tamarind, Kendu, Sal and many more. The sanctuary is also the home to a large number of endangered medicinal plants such as Cycas sphaerica, Gadenia gummifera, Zanthoxylum rhetsa, Tinospora cordifolia, Litsea glutinosa, Justicia adhatoda, Cissus quadrangularis and others.

Fauna of Kotagarh Wildlife Sanctuary
The main faunal population of the sanctuary includes Gaur, Wild Pig, Peafowl, Barking Deer, Sambar, Nilgai, Tiger, Mongoose, Wild Boar, Civet Cat, Four Horned Antelope and many others. Rich biodiversity can also be observed in terms of avian species. Numerous birds flaunting their vivid colours can be spotted in the sanctuary. Numerous varieties of invertebrates also dwell in the sanctuary such as Spiders, Dragonflies, Moths, Butterflies etc.

A visit to Kotagarh Wildlife Sanctuary presents a memorable experience of adventure and thrill. Berhampur serves as the nearest railhead to reach the sanctuary. Phulbani is a major town located nearby and roadways can also be availed by the tourists.
