Koppal District, KarnatakaKoppal District is a newly carved district from Raichur district. It was formed 1st April 1998. It has four talukas: Koppal, Gangavathi, Kushtagi and Yelburga. Koppal is ancient Kopana that was a major holy place of the Jains. The towns of Koppal District are: Gangavathi, Kanakagiri, Karatagi, Koppal, Kuknoor, Kushtagi, Munirabad, Yalaburga and Bhagyanagar. Koppal district headquarters is near to the world heritage centre Hampi. This district is surrounded by Raichur district in the east, Gadag district in the West, Bagalkot district in the north and Bellary district in the south.

According to the 2011 census Koppal district has a population of 1,391,292. The literacy rate is 67.28 %. The Mahadeva Temple of the Koppal district is an instance of Karnataka-Dravida enunciation with a nagara structure.
