It is only train route that connects two port cities of Mumbai and Mangalore. The challenges to build a railway track were huge. The Konkan Railways were restructured and opened to the public on 26th January, 1998. Adequate number of passenger trains and ferry trains ply on a regular basis in this zone. Trains, such as, Janshatabdi Express, Matsyaganda Express, Rajdhani Express, Konkankanya Express, Mangala Lakshadweep Express, Thiruvananthapuram Netravati Express and Garib Rath Express are a part of the railway services at Konkan Railways.

The work at Konkan Railways has been divided into several departments: accounts, information technology, human resource, administration, medical, mechanical and others. The stations have been well provided with several facilities for the passengers. Cloak rooms, retiring rooms, easy cancellation and reservation facilities, etc.
