Kolkata National Medical CollegeKolkata National Medical College is one of the six medical colleges in Kolkata. It is located in Gorachand Road, Kolkata. The college had originated as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons as early as 1907. It was established by Dr. Subodh Kumar Mallick. The official name of the college was later altered to National Medical College of India. Finally, the educational institution acquired the name National Medical Institute, also known as `Jatiya Ayurbigyan Vidyalaya`. Kolkata National Medical College and Hospital has 1,400 beds and 601 nurses, apart from several doctors and physicians.

History of Kolkata National Medical College
Kolkata National Medical College was officially launched in 1948 and nationalized in 1967. Locally known as Chittaranjan Hospital, Kolkata National Medical College was affiliated with the Calcutta University till the year 2003. Presently, the organization is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. The college is officially recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI). An MBBS course in Kolkata National Medical College is of five and a half year duration which includes one year of compulsory internship. The medical institute is currently equipped with a high dependency unit (HDU) introduced by the gynaecology and anaesthesia department. This unit delivers significant facilities necessary for pre-delivery care, with the help of infrastructure akin to that of an ITU. It was set up on the 1st of `Baisakh`. The institute was inaugurated by the Indian freedom fighter and national leader, Subash Chandra Bose.

Admission criteria of Kolkata National Medical College
The eligibility criteria for students are their rankings obtained in West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations (WBJEE) and scores received in the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).Candidates aspiring admission into Kolkata National Medical College and Hospital should be class XII pass with a minimum aggregate score of 50% in the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology altogether. Numerous students are enrolled into the various academic courses of Kolkata National Medical College and Hospital every year. There are seat reservations for certain categories like SC, ST and OBC. The new academic session commences from June and continues till July.

Other criteria proposed by West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination board
Candidates seeking admission to Kolkata National Medical College and Hospital should bear in mind a few requirements. They should be Indian residents who have been residing in the state of West Bengal for a continuous period of atleast 10 years immediately before the date of application. Candidates who are looking forward to courses in nursing can however enrol themselves in the institute even if they are residing in West Bengal for a minimum time period of 5 years. Permanent inhabitants of West Bengal who possess a permanent residential address in the state are also eligible for admission into Kolkata National Medical College and Hospital. Facilities provided at Kolkata National Medical College
Accommodation: The institute is equipped with seven hostels for providing accommodation facilities to students, one belonging to girls and the rest six are boys` hostels. The girls` hostel is named `Ladies` Hostel which offers all the optimum amenities required for a healthy academic ambience. This hostel is located within the college premises while the six boys` hostels are situated outside the college campus grounds. They are in close proximity to the college. Out of the six boys` hostels, three are administered by government and the remaining three are supervised by private organizations. The government-operated boys` hostels are `Main Hostel`, `Lynton Hostel` and `Deshbandhu Hostel`. The other hostels are `Dr.Sundarimohan Hostel`, `Khudiram Hostel` and `Dilkusha Hostel`.

College library: Kolkaka National Medical College has a library which is considered one of the greatest medical libraries in Kolkata. The library contains 17,000 books and 42 journals. Students can avail adequate books issuing facilities in Kolkata National Medical College library.

Computer laboratory: The computer centre of the college is commanded by the Alumni Association of the institute. Students possessing membership of the computer centre is permitted access to the internet and are able to surf the web.

Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States underwent an operation by the reputed gastroenterologist Dr. Bimal Ghosh, who was once associated with Kolkata Medical College. Another notable alumni, Dr. Avijit Lahiri has excelled in the field of medicine.
