Kolkata Knight Riders, also called KKR, is a franchisee that represents Kolkata in the Indian Premier League (IPL), a Twenty20 cricket championship conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. For the first and third edition of IPL, the team was led by Saurav Ganguly, and Brendon McCullum in IPL 2. In 2014, Pepsi IPL Tournament, Kolkata Knight Riders beat Kings XI Punjab by 3 wickets.

Gautam Gambhir has been appointed the captain of KKR from 2011. For the first thee season, Saurav Ganguly was the Icon Player for KKR. Presently the team is captained by Gautam Gambhir and coached by Trevor Bayliss. The team won its first Indian Premier League championship in the year 2012, defeating the defending champions - Chennai Super Kings at their own backyard M. A. Chidambaram Stadium (often referred to as Chepauk) in the Indian state of Chennai. Kolkata Knight Riders became the second team after Chennai Super Kings, to win the Indian Premier League title twice. In the sensitive final match between KKR and KXIP held at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Manish Pandey who later became the Player of the Match smashed 94 off 50 balls. Set 200 to win, Kolkata Knight Riders lost the in-form Robin Uthappa early but Manish Pandey steered the chase with Gautam Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan. This is the ninth consecutive triumph for the Knight Riders, an Indian Premier League record. Yusuf Pathan is the only cricketer to have won three Indian Premier League titles.
Banning of Kochi Tuskers
Due to the disbanding of Kochi Tuskers Kerala, each team played the remaining eight teams twice, once at home and once away. Therefore, each team played 16 matches. KKR bought back Brendon McCullum and West Indies Sunil Narine. They also bought South-African Marchant de Lange. The team replaced Coach Dav Whatmore by Trevor Bayliss. Kolkata Knight Riders also launched a new marketing campaign titled "New Dawn New Knights" and a new logo.

The iconic Eden Gardens is, officially, the home ground for Kolkata Knight Riders. The ground is one of the best Indian Cricket Stadiums in the country. The ground also happens to be the largest cricket stadium in entire Asia, together with the Salt Lake Stadium and May Day Stadium.

Theme Song of Kolkata Knight Riders
The theme song for the KKR is Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo (We will do it, Fight for it, and Win it) and purple and gold are the official colours for the team. In a recent survey conducted, KKR has been valued as the second most valuable franchise brand. Principal owner of KKR, Shahrukh Khan, has played a major role in taking the team to the world forum. The performance of the team improved, in the fourth season of IPL as the team qualified for IPL playoffs and made it to the Champions League Twenty 20 for the first time.

Saurav Ganguly, a former Indian Cricket Player was the icon player for the KKR for first three seasons and led the team in the first and third edition (2008 and 2010 respectively). The team in the fourth edition of IPL did however, not pick him.
The team went on a path of drastic revamp, and went in for a new team, coach and captain. Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the new captain. Some of the other players who were bought in the auction were Yusuf Pathan, Shakib Al Hasan, Brad Haddin, Jacques Kallis, Brett Lee, Ryan ten Doeschate and Eoin Morgan.
