The origin of Koel River is in the Palamu Tiger Reserve and flows in the western part of Palamu District. The river divides into two - the North Koel River and the South Koel River. The former river is tapped near Kutku for irrigation reasons and finally joins with the Son River. The latter one flows across the Indian state of Orissa near Rourkela, before merging with Brahmani River.
