Kizhi is an Ayurvedic treatment performed to purify and rejuvenate the body, mind and soul. It is also known as Pinda Sweda in Sanskrit - sweda meaning to sweat. This therapy is done to provide relief to the patient from problems like arthritis, spondylosis, muscle pains etc.
Steps of Kizhi
To perform this massage, in the first step heated herbs, oils, powders and other prescribed materials are tied into muslin bags and then dipped in hot medicated oil. This is done so that the ingredients seep through the bag and penetrate deep into the body to result in a therapeutic treatment. In the next step, these bags are placed with varying degrees of pressure on different body parts. While placing the bags, special focus has to be given on areas where the marma- or nerve points are located. This is followed by specific massages, performed using the fingers, heel of the hand or palm. Usually, the massage is done for 45 minutes per day for a period of 7 to 14 days.
