The fort was built by the Portuguese during the 16th century. Later, it was also used by the Maratha ruler, Shivaji for his defense purposes. Most of the region around the fort is covered with Suru trees.

The best time to visit Kelve Fort is from November to March. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and Andheri Railway Station are the nearest to visit the fort.
