`Kathasaritsagara` in Sanskrit means ocean of streams of stories. Kathasaritsagara is the renowned collection of Indian legends, fairy tales and folk tales. Kathasaritsagara was written by Somadeva in the beginning of the 12th century.
Kathasaritsagara consists of eighteen books of one hundred and twenty four chapters. this ancient book consists of more than twenty one thousand verses. The main part Kathasaritsagara is the adventures of Naravahanadatta, son of the legendary king Udayana.
The Kathasaritsagara is primarily based on Gunadhya`s Brhat-katha written in Paisachi dialect from the south of India. Somadeva had collected various works of fiction and beautifully digested them into a harmonious whole.
