The Oraon Tribe, Baiga Tribe, Binjhwari Tribe and Majhwar tribe of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh celebrate Karma festival. Karma Festival is celebrated as it stands for the fertility by some tribes. Some other tribes also observe the festival as the rainy season ends.
On this day folks go in the woods to collect fruits and flowers, and they worship Karma Devta, a tribal goddess who is represented with a branch of karma tree. The most important thing of this festival is the cutting of three branches of the `karam` tree. In this festival, there is a dancing ground called "akhara", where the women used to perform Karma Dance. After the dance, tribal chief narrates the significance of this ritual and the legends of Karam Devi, who is believed to be the Goddess of Wealth and Children. Then, they sing and dance whole night.
On the next day, branches are garlanded and offered the flowers, rice and curd. Red coloured baskets filled with grains are placed before the branches. Barley seedlings are distributed among the young people, who wear it on their heads. Branches are worshipped and their blessings sought.
