It is located at a distance of 12 kilometers from Bhawanipatna and makes for an ideal tourist attraction in Orissa. The sanctuary houses a plethora of wild animals. The sanctuary is situated at a picturesque setting and the ambience within the park is also very calm and tranquil. These innate denizens of nature in their own simple ways beautify the landscape, thereby increasing its charm.

Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1992. Many steps were undertaken by the Orissa State Government with the aim of preserving, conserving and increasing the wildlife population. It has also taken the initiative to safeguard and conserve these sanctuaries for a healthy wildlife population in order to strike a balance in the ecosystem of the place. Plans are chalked out, trees have been planted and a vigorous breeding program has already started.

The Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in its flora and fauna. Dense deciduous forests and lush greenery are the main vegetation of the Karlapat wildlife sanctuary. The commonly found animal species are gaur, barking deer, sambhal, leopard, Nilgai, mouse deer, and many others.

A beautiful waterfall in the vicinity of the Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary also adds charm to the place. Tourists are welcomed to admire the rippling cascade at Patalaganga and a colossal fall at Phurli Jharan. The water is a perennial source of water that quenches the thirst of many wild denizens when scorching overhead sun parches the landscape. This beautiful place has been developed as a picnic spot for the local visitors and draws large number of visitors from far of places.
