Kappad Beach, Beaches of KeralaKappad Beach is one of the most pleasant beaches of Kerala. The beach was discovered by the Portuguese traveller Vasco Da Gama during 15th century. It is also famous as "Kappakadavu" beach. It is very peaceful and celebrated for its serenity and picturesque beauty. A very rousing characteristic of the Kappad beach is the rock that is extended beyond the sea.

Location of Kappad Beach
Kappad Beach located at Kappad is nearly 16 kilometres from Kozhikode in Kerala. It"s one of the famed beaches that are 16 kilometres away from Calicut, India.

History of Kappad Beach
The Kappad beach was discovered by the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama in 15th century. His voyage gave the Europeans a sea route to reach the wealth of the Malabar Coast which resulted in European dominance of India for about 450 years. It was the spices and wealth of Malabar that first brought the Arabs, the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English to Kerala. Kozhikode was then the most significant trade centre of the Malabar area and the Zamorins who this impressive land. Vasco Da Gama landed at Panthalayani, the then well-known port in Kerala 5 kilometres away from Kappad.

Attractions of Kappad Beach
Some of the popular places that attract a thousand of tourists from all over the world are as follows:

Pookot Lake: This stunning fresh water lake is located half away from the Calicut, which is covered by trees all around.

Kappad Backwaters: This place presents a delightful view of backwaters that contains vast network of lagoons, lakes and canals. People can visit the River Kallai and Elathur Channel to enjoy the boat ride on this river.

Short Cruises at Kappad: An exciting journey into the rural area presents a short impression at pastoral village. Here fishermen are found launching their cockleshell boats, white lotuses floating here and there in ponds, and women catching fish with their feet.

Thusharagiri Water Falls: It is a well-liked tourist attraction and is situated at the distance of 50 kilometres from Kozhikode. The peaceable greenery and the water cascading from the hills makes this place a magnificent hangout spot.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary: It is a safe paradise for inhabitant and travelling birds, which is situated 25 kilometres away from the beach. It is a dwelling of a large number of birds like gulls, sand pipers and terns.

Other attractions in Kozhikode include The Art Gallery, Mananchira Square, Krishna Menon Museum, Pazhassiraja Museum, etc.

Visiting Information of Kappad Beach
The nearest airport is Karipur International Airport, which is at the distance of 23 kilometres from Calicut. Nearest railhead is Kozhikode, situated 16 kilometres away from the Kappad Beach. The National Highway 66 is well connected to Calicut, while National Highway 17 connects Mumbai via Udupi, Goa and Mangalore.
