Kannauj district is an administrative district headquarters of the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located 120 km east towards the state capital Lucknow along the Ganga River. Kannauj is an ancient town which is famous for perfumes popularly known as "Attar". The town has historical significance about its origin. The historic town of Kannauj, northwest of Kanpur, is the administrative center.
Geography of Kannauj District
Kannauj is located at an average elevation of 139 metres (456 feet). Kannauj District is sharing border with Auraiya District to the South, Kanpur Nagar to the East, Kanpur Dehat District to the Southeast, Etawah to the Southwest, Mainpuri Districtn to the West, Farrukhabad District to the North and Hardoi District to the Northeast. The district was split from Farrukhabad on September 18, 1997, and is part of Kanpur Division. The district occupies an area of approximately 1993 sqkm.
The Ganges is the main river of the district at the North East border of the district. Kali River is at the northern border of the district while the Ishan River flows through the District.
The climate of the district is characterized by a hot dry summer ranging from 24 to 42 degree centigrade and a pleasant cold season in the months of January and February. The average rainfall of the district is approximately 80 cm.
Demographics of Kannauj District
According to the 2011 census Kannauj district has a population of 1,658,005. Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 19.37%. Kannauj has a sex ratio of 879 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 74.01%. Hindi is the local language but people also speak Urdu and Kannauji.
Histoical and Spiritual importance
There are many temples in Kannauj which are very important by both historical as well as spiritual purposes. In the time of King Harshavardhana it was the kingdom of India. It is very much famous for perfume also. That is the reason why it is mentioned as the city of perfumes.
Transportation of Kannauj
Kannauj is well connected by road. Several State Transport buses run from this district. Some of the railway stations in district are Kannauj, Gursahaiganj, Jasoda, Malikpur, Mani Mau, Kannauj City and Khudlapur which connects most of the towns and villages in the district.
