`Kankra` means `hills`, while `jhor` means jungles and forests. Thus together they add to the sense of crab lands amidst the forest frolic. Kankrajhor comprises of 9,000 hectares of hardwood trees including kusum, shaal, segun or teak, mahua and akashmani. Cashew nuts, Coffee and oranges are cultivated at Kankrajhor.

The north western portion of Jhargram sub-division is famous for its hilly location, sylvan beauty and streams and cascades. Most beautiful is Kankrajhor area, in the forest area trees like Sal, Teak, Mahua, Kendu etc. are intimate in numbers. Among the cascades, Mayurjharna is most famous. A congregation of wild animals like Deer, wild bear, bear and rabbit can be seen here.

Kankrajhor almost entails the rhapsodies of ethereal fairytale for its full moon nights of winter and spring season which are but no less than a hypnotic experience. The Dolma Hills of Kankrajhor have witnessed nocturnal visits from wildlife from Bihar, including tigers, leopards and elephants. Bears and wild boars regular stray to the hills in search of Mahua tree sap that is a potent intoxicant and is an active ingredient of country liquor. Nights at Kankrajhor resonate and reverberate with the throb of Adivasi drums. The steady rhythms of Madal drumbeats waft in from the surrounding tribal settlements.
