Kane Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, is one of most beautiful and famed sanctuary of the country and is considered to be a cherished tourist destination. It spans over an area of 55 square kilometres and forms an excellent place for spending a delightful leisure, away from the bustling city life. The sanctuary has a pleasant climate having vast assortment of flora and fauna. The lush greenery and vivid flowers make the place breathtakingly beautiful. It was declared as a sanctuary in 2007, in the month of April. The sanctuary is under the Wildlife Protection Act of the Indian Government.
Geography of Kane Wildlife Sanctuary
Kane Wildlife Sanctuary exhibits a hot and humid climate during summer. However during winter the forests and the valleys, particularly in the eastern part, experiences extreme cold. In winters, the average temperature has been recorded to be 15 to 21 degrees while in monsoon it becomes around 22 degrees. Siji River and its tributaries form the northern and western borders of the sanctuary.
Flora of Kane Wildlife Sanctuary
Kane Wildlife Sanctuary has a rich biodiversity which has still not been entirely explored. Owing to the varying altitudinal ranges in the sanctuary, a vast diversity can be spotted in terms of flora as well as fauna. Flora of the region mainly comprises sub-tropical broadleaf hill forest, semi-evergreen forest and tropical evergreen forest. Bamboo plantations are found quite frequently. Vast species of herbs and shrubs can also be spotted here.
Fauna of Kane Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary has recorded around 70 species of birds; however the actual number has been predicted to be much more. White-winged Wood Duck and Rufous-necked Hornbill are the common inhabitants. Wood Duck is also an attraction of the sanctuary. Other common animals found in Kane Wildlife Sanctuary include Wild Dog, Gaur, Black Bear, Elephant, Deer, Lions, Panthers, Small Cats and many more. A variety of reptiles and lizards are also found here.
Visiting Information
Kane Wildlife Sanctuary is best visited between the months of October and April. The spellbinding beauty of the place makes it one of the most enticing tourist destinations. It is well connected via road, rail and air. Along in Arunachal Pradesh and Lilabari in Assam are the nearest airports while Silapathar, in Assam, is the nearest railway station. It can also be reached through road from Tawang by bus or taxi.
