Kandla is a small to medium-sized deciduous or evergreen plant. The botanical name of this plant is Bauhinia roxburghiana voigt. Kandla is also known as `kandlao` or `kandla` in Hindi, `koilar` in Marathi and `kural` in Punjabi. Kandla is found in the north-western Himalayas up to 1500 metre, and in the deciduous hill forests of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. In peninsular India, it is not common and is usually confined to moister forest habitats such as valleys.

Description of Kandla
The plant has dark brown or grey bark. Its leaves are rigidly coriaceous, cordate or truncate at base and glabrous. Flowers of this plant are white or yellow, borne in large terminal panicles. The fruits are hard, flat and glabrous. In central India, it is evergreen in its native forest habitat, where it flowers between September and December and bears fruits from February to March.

Medicinal Benefits of Kandla
As this plant has a number of medicinal properties, the Indians use it for treating diseases. The edible gum exuded from the cut bark is used as an external application to promote healing of sores, and is taken internally as an emmenagogue and diuretic.
