Kameng Elephant Reserve is a famous elephant reserve which is located in the Himalayan foothills of East Kameng and West Kameng Districts of the north-eastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It was erected on 19th June in the year 2002 and occupies an area measuring about 1, 894 square kilometres. Its official headquarters are situated at Seijosa. The Kameng Elephant Reserve comprises Pakhui Tiger Reserve across Kameng River, Sessa Orchid Sanctuary which is located in the northern side, Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary which is existent in the western side and Reserved Forests which are a part of the Khellong Forest Division. Kameng Elephant Reserve is based at an elevation of nearly 100 metres to 3, 250 metres above mean sea level.
This elephant reserve spreads from Papum River in the eastern end till the boundary between Bhutan in the west and Arunachal Pradesh, while to the northern part of the Kameng Elephant Reserve is present the Seppa Unclassed State Forests and Tenga Reserved Forest.
Fauna of Kameng Elephant Reserve
There are numerous animals surviving in the Kameng Elephant Reserve, whose one of the main highlights is the presence of 377 Indian Elephants as per the 2001 census. Black Giant Squirrel, Himalayan Black Bear, Yellow-Throated Macaque, Fishing Cat, Royal Bengal Tiger, Sunda Loris, Capped Langur, Clouded Leopard, Civet, Red Panda, Rhesus Macaque, Hare, Leopard, Indian Bison, Jackal, Musk Deer, Sambhar, Fox, Jungle Cat, Wild Dog and others are the various species of wildlife exists in this region. About 300 species of birds including four species of Hornbills and 250 varieties of butterflies are also existent in Kameng Elephant Reserve.
