Kalki Koechlin is one of the most acclaimed Indian Actresses of the Indian film industry. This actress of French descent entered the acting world with Anurag Kashyap`s movie Dev.D which was a modern adaptation of a Bengali novel Devdas authored by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee. In a short span of time, Kalki has gained prominence in the industry as an actress of immense potentiality through her brilliant portrayal of varied characters. She, along with her husband Anurag Kashyap, also works as a co-screenwriter.
Early Life of Kalki Koechlin
Joel Koechlin is the father of Kalki Koechlin who came from France to India about 38 years ago. He met Kalki`s mother Francoise Armandie in Pondicherry at Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Auroville. They eventually settled in a village situated near Ooty, known as Kallatty where he established his business of microlight aircraft and hang-gliders designing. Maurice Koechlin was their ancestor who was a structural engineer and had significant involvement in the construction and designing of the Eiffel Tower. Kalki was born in Kallatty on 10 January 1984. Her parents are the disciples of Sri Aurobindo.
Kalki did her schooling from Hebron School, Ooty. Later she joined Goldsmiths, University of London for studying drama and theatre. There, for about two years, she had also worked with Theatre of Relativity, a theatre company. She also acted in a number of plays including Marivaux`s The Dispute and David Hare`s The Blue Room. Afterwards she moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in Bollywood.
Film Career of Kalki Koechlin
Initially, in Mumbai, Kalki Koechlin was involved in modelling assignments for TV commercials. In the year 2008, she co-founded a theatre group named Quaff Theatre.
She got her first break in the film world with the movie Dev.D in the year 2009 where she played the role of Chandramukhi (Chanda). Kalki was affluent with French, English and Tamil but she had to learn Hindi for the movie. After the release of the movie, her performance got great critical acclamations. In 2010, she also received Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her debut movie. Kalki then performed in a Coca Cola advertisement with actor Imran Khan. The TOI Advertisement awards voted the advertisement as the best of the IPL. Her next venture was the movie Shaitan in 2011 where his performance was stated as admirable. For this movie she also won The Global Indian Film and TV Honours for Best Supporting Actress. Her next movie in the same year was Zoya Akhtar`s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara where she was starred with Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol. In 2011 she also worked as a co writer with Anurag Kashyap for the movie That Girl in Yellow Boots. She also acted in the movie. She was highly appreciated for portraying an intricate role in the movie. Her other movies include My Friend Pinto, Trishna, Shanghai, Ek Thi Daayan and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
Personal Life of Kalki Koechlin
On 30th April 2011, Kalki Koechlin married the prominent filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. They had a private marriage ceremony organized in Ooty.
