Kalika Temple is one of the Valabhi Temples in North India located in Uttarakhand in North India. It is a small Valabhi temple situated near the Jagannath temple which is the main group of the Jageswara temples and the Navadurga Temple. It consists of a rectangular Garbagriha and a Kapila in its ground plan.
Architecture of Kalika Temple
The height of Kalika Temple is almost 3.25 m. The temple is constructed on a simple "Prasad Pitha" that has been paved with stone slabs. Its elevation of the temple in the upward order has a simple "Adhisthana" that is lifted by 2 "Bhittas", "Vedibandha" and plain "Jangha" surmounted by "Valabhi Shikhara". The Vedibandha has been raised by usual plain mouldings, "Khura Kumbha", an "Antarpatra" and "Kapotapali". A fine "Natarpatra" has also been placed between the jangha and the shikhara. A pseudo miniature Valabhi temple has been represented in the centre of the "Sursenaka" of the "Skandhavedi". It is in the lower part of the two-tired shikhara. The eastern portion of the Valabhi is almost in bad shape while on the other hand the "Chandrasala" placed over its western parsva remains adorned with a full bloomed lotus flower. Lions i.e. sardulas are depicted in a sitting posture over the Valabhi.
The west facing entrance also known as the "Uttarabhimukha Pravesara-dwara" of the Kalika Temple is plain and simple. Its upper kapotapali is embellished with small chandrasalas. However, the sukhanasa that is on the kapila walls is almost damaged. Based on stylistic grounds the Kalika temple may be placed in the later half of the 8th Century A.D.
