Kaithal District, HaryanaKaithal District is one of the 21 districts located in the northern Indian state of Haryana and its headquarters is based in Kaithal town. The total area occupied by this Indian district measures about 2317 square kilometres and is a portion of the Ambala Division.

History of Kaithal District
Kaithal District was formed on 1st November, 1989 and the history of this region is as old as the era of the Mahabharata. Historical accounts suggest that King Yudhisthir was the founder of this part of the country and that `Kaithal` has been obtained from `Kapisthala`, meaning monkeys. Lord Hanuman was born here, according to the Puranas and Kaithal was visited by famous travellers like Hieun Tsang and Fa Hien. Kaithal District became a significant literary centre during the regime of Chenghiz Khan. It was here that the tombs of Razia Sultana and her husband are present and it is believed that Kaithal was ruled by Nadir Shah during 1938. Kaithal District was once ruled by the rulers belonging to the `Bhai` dynasty.

As per the records of 2011 census, Kaithal District possesses a population of 10, 72, 861 and a sex ratio measuring 880 females for 1000 males. The literacy rate as revealed by the census is 70.6%. It has been ranked 423rd in the country of India.

Kaithal District is a region which has a cultural background and interesting historical heritage. Eight gates and seven ponds surround this district, which had been a well-known market of the state of Uttar Pradesh since ancient periods. The regional inhabitants of Kaithal District have been struggling ever since the reign of Pathans and Mughals.

Education of Kaithal District
There exist two sub divisions and six education blocks in Kaithal District. Haryana Engineering College, Kasturba Gandhi Girls School Rajound, DIET Kaithal, Ambedkar Government College, etc. are some of the educational institutes located in this district. Certain education programs are also being undertaken in Kaithal, under the scheme of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

Administration of Kaithal District
Guhla and Kaithal are the two different tehsils which are existent in Kaithal District. Siwan, Rajound, Pundri, Dhand and Kalayat are the five sub-tehsils of the district and they are all a portion of Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency.

Kaithal District is home to innumerable significant pilgrimage centres which are visited by numerous devotees throughout the year. Amvajanma Tirtha, Rigvediya Manusa and Manasa Tirtha, Rasamangla Tirtha, Kotikuta Tirtha, Gandhrava Tirtha, Saraka Tirtha, Vyasasthali-Basthali Tirtha, Brahma Tirtha, Soma Tirtha- Sainsa, Trivistapa Tirtha - Tyontha, Rinamochana Tirtha - Rasina, Mishraka Tirtha - Nissang, Kulottarana Tirtha and a few of the several religious spots situated here.
