Jogamaya Devi College, KolkataThe Jogamaya Devi College was established to disseminate education among women and empower them. More than 80 years old, the college has a rich history and have achieved distinction in diverse fields. The college encourages the students to establish themselves in all spheres of life so that they can work with confidence, independence and complete dedication.

History of Jogamaya Devi College
The growing demand for women`s education in the South Kolkata area compelled the authority of Asutosh College to open the women`s section in July, 1932. After this women"s section completed 25 years of existence, it was realized that the college should be run as the separate Women`s College. In the year 1957, the institution was separated from the Men`s College and affiliated to Calcutta University as Asutosh College for women in the year 1958 and subsequently renamed as Jogamaya Devi College.

The college had a very humble beginning but it has turned to one of the largest women`s colleges in West Bengal and attracts students not only from West Bengal, but also from the outer states and countries like Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Jogamaya Devi College has a cosmopolitan character and it give an emphasis on the total development of the college and thereby attaining a unique position in the sphere of women`s education.

Courses offered in Jogamaya Devi College
The Jogamaya Devi College offers Honours and General course in 14 subjects- Bengali, English, Philosophy, History, Sanskrit, Political Sciences, Geography, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Zoology, Statistics and Psychology. The Honours and General classes are held separately and the medium of instruction is English.

Facilities offered at Jogamaya Devi College
The students of Jogamaya Devi College have many facilities. There is a common room, a cheap store and canteen, students` aid fund, Students` health home, students` union etc. College Magazine is published every year and annual sports and games are also there to cater to the diverse needs of the students. There is also a National Cadet Corps (NCC) in the college along with different cells for the welfare of students like placement cell, student"s welfare cell, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Classes welfare cell and grievance cell. The Jogamaya Devi College observes Women`s Day through seminar, symposium and cultural activities.

Jogamaya Devi College has a well-equipped library with reading room facility. The library has a stock of about 60,000 books and journals. There is also a separate textbook library with a reading room for student`s convenience. The Departments, which offers Honours courses, have individual seminar libraries for the bonafide students. In the extended campus of the college there are two more common room libraries.

Jogamaya Devi College Computer Centre runs in collaboration with the Institute of Computer Engineers, Kolkata. Computer training is provided to the interested students beyond the college hours. To meet the demands of the changing era, advanced Computer courses have been introduced. The courses are offered in affordable fees. The courses are updated at reasonable intervals to fulfil the ever-changing requirements of the IT industry.

Scholarships offered in Jogamaya Devi College
Scholarships and awards are distributed among the meritorious students. Namely the Principal Panchanan Sinha Memorial Scholarship, Principal Kalidas Sen Memorial Scholarship, Principal Harimohan Bhattacharya Memorial Scholarship, Principal Mohini Mohan Mukherjee Memorial Scholarship, Principal Arundhati Sen Memorial Scholarship, Principal J. C. Banerjee Memorial Scholarship and the Jogamaya Devi Memorial Scholarship to name a few. The Jogamaya Devi College Award (NCC) is given to the Best Cadet and the Jogamaya Devi College Award (Sports) is given to the Best Sports Person.
