Tourism in Jhunjhunu , RajasthanAs is the case with most of the kingdoms of Rajasthan the settlements have generally evolved around the city. Within this city most of the mansions are grouped around Nehru bazaar. It takes five minutes by rickshaw north of the main bus stand along Station Road. The first local attractions that the travelers will come across are the havelis facing each other on a lane running north. These havelis are known as Modi Havelis and they contain some of the finest murals and woodcarving in town, including a depiction of Queen Victoria. The area around it is the market place known as Gandhi Chowk.

As the travelers move on they will come across the nest haveli that is known as the Kaniram Narsinghdas Tibrewala Haveli and was built in1883. This haveli boasts of coloured-glass windows around the top of its baithak or the sitting place. It was the pillared reception area. The main attractions of the place are the depictions of the steam trains and a European holding his dog. Most of the local attractions are located within the city periphery.

Further up the same lane, the Bihari temple features some of the oldest Shekhawati murals, painted in 1776 in vegetable pigments. These were built in a time when the Marwari merchants were taking over the kingdom whose foundation was laid by Sardul Singh. The very presence of numerous havelis establishes the city of Jhunjhunu as a center where the middle class merchants thrived.

But besides the havelis the Jhunjhunu city also houses several ancient monuments that tell the tales of the royal personages. The Khetri Mahal is one such place. Built in 1760 it is located at the foot of the conical Kana Pahar hill. Around this place the travelers will also find the Badalgarh Fort. Its design is undoubtedly original though it is in ruins. But again it cannot be denied that it is a beautiful heap of ruins. The Pirzada Mahalla is the place where a grand mosque is surrounded by tombs dating back to 1500. Many of Jhunjhunu`s Muslim population were wealthy merchants who built painted havelis of their own. Apart from this a British cantonment also survives here.

In the north of Jhunjhunu city lies the famous step well. This place is also famous for the Rani Sati Mandir. The centre of a phenomenally popular Sati Mata cult, it is reputedly the richest in the country after Tirupati. Hence it receives thousands of pilgrims each year.

There are adequate accommodation units in the city as well. Restaurants serving traditional Rajasthani dishes are also scattered throughout the city. Local transports are easily available in the city to tour the local attractions as well as for excursion tours. The nearest to the city of Jhunjhunu is at Jaipur. From here one can get hold of a rented car or a taxi to arrive at the city. It is also well connected by road and railways with the rest of Rajasthan.
