Jhajjar District is one of the 21 districts of Haryana. Its administrative headquarter is situated in Jhajjar town at a distance of near about 65 km from Delhi. Apart from Jhajjar, other major towns in the district are Bahadurgarh and Beri. Bahadurgarh was founded by Rathi Jats and was formerly known as Sharafabad. It is situated at around 29 kms from Delhi and has developed into an important industrial centre of the state.
Location of Jhajjar District
Jhajjar District lies in the south east of Haryana. This district lies between 28 degree 33 minutes north and 28 degree 42 minutes south latitude and 76 degree 28 minutes 45 seconds west and 76 degree 84 minutes 15 seconds east longitude. On its north lies Rohtak sub-division of Rohtak District and in the south Rewari sub-division of Rewari District is located. In the east lies Tikri border and in the west lies Charkhi Dadri sub-division of Bhiwani District.
History of Jhajjar District
Jhajjar District was formed on July 15th, 1997. Jhajjar town is said to have been founded by Chhaju and Chhajunagar was changed to Jhajjar. Its name is derived from Jharnaghar, a natural fountain. After 1857, Jhajjar District came under the authority of British rulers. Jhajjar was reconstructed as a new separate district but after sometime, district status of Jhajjar was forfeited and it was annexed to Rohtak District as a tehsil.
Geography of Jhajjar District
Average altitude of Jhajjar District is about 715 metres above mean sea level (MSL) and a slope from south to north from Rewari towards Jhajjar is around 40 feet. In the eastern part of district, the area is considerably even. Some area is uneven and also suffers from inundation and water logging during the monsoon season. The district falls within the classified arid and semi-arid zones. Broadly four types of soil are available in the district namely clay, loamy clay, loamy sandy and sandy. It is alluvial in nature and fertile. However, the soil is deficient in Nitrogen. Hot summer, cold winter and meager rain fall are the main climatic characteristics of Jhajjar District.
Demography of Jhajjar District
Total area occupied by Jhajjar District is 1834 sq kms which is around 4.05 percent of the total area of the state. As per 2001 Census, total population of this district is 880072, of which rural population is 684975 and urban population is 195097. Rural population is nearly 77.83 percent of the total population. Population density is 484 persons per sq km. Jhajjar town has a total population of 39002. Bahadurgarh has a population of 139933 and Beri has a population of 16162.
Administration of Jhajjar District
Administration of Jhajjar District is headed by the Deputy Commissioner. He is responsible for the maintenance of law and order and also redresses the grievances of the public and implements all the policy decisions of the government. Jhajjar District is divided into two sub-divisions, three tehsils and one sub tehsil. It has 260 villages.
Economy of Jhajjar District
The economy of Jhajjar District is primarily based on agriculture that is agrarian in character. About 57.58 percent of total workers (392527) are engaged in agriculture and allied activities. As per census 2001, only 7548 households are engaged in industrial labour and rests are engaged in other activities. Out of total geographical area of the district only 77.38 percent area is under cultivation. The main crops in Rabi season are wheat, gram, barley, mustard, sugarcane and in Kharif season are cotton, paddy, jowar, and bajra. On the industrial front, Jhajjar District is now witnessing industrial growth at faster pace by providing good infrastructure to the industries. At present 1477 small scale Industrial units are working in the district. Besides these, around 37 large and medium units also exit in the district.
Tourism in Jhajjar District
Bhindawas Complex in Jhajjar District is known as the best tourist complex. This complex is situated around 15 kms from Jhajjar town. The birds and the lake is the main attraction of the complex. The lake spread over in 1074 acres of land with beautiful gardens. The water of Bhindawas Lake is being used by the migratory birds of about 200 species. The fairs and festivals of Jhajjar District are other attractions for the tourists. In Beri a huge fair is held at the occasion of Navratri. Bhimeshwari Devi temple is worth visiting. The Archeological Museum of Jhajjar is probably, the biggest museum in Haryana. It came into existence in the year 1959. The Museum has vast collections of antique coins as well as some rare variety of idols. It has a huge variety of antics from all over Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Allahabad. Apart from these idols the museum also comprises large number of big and small sizes of idols and statues from Rampart Period.
