Jamtara is a district headquarters and a notified area in Jamtara district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Jamtara is a recently formed district of Jharkhand State that came into existence on 26th April 2001. It was formed by carving out four blocks from Dumka District.

History of Jamtara
According to the chronicles of history, Jamtara had been under the supremacy of the Hetampur Raj and Bardhaman Maharaja-Dhiraj, when it was a part of Birbhum. The culture of Jamtara was influenced by former Raj families and zamindars, who resided here. Two of the most prominent people who influenced the culture of the city include the Raja of Jamtara and the zamindar family of Jamjuri.

Geography of Jamtara
Jamtara comprises of only 4 blocks. The district is located at a lower altitude of Chhota Nagpur plateau and its latitude and longitude vary form 230-10` to 240-5` north and 860-30` to 870-15` east, respectively. The Deputy Commissioner is the head of District administration.

Demography of Jamtara
According to 2011 India census, Jamtara had a population of 7, 90,207. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Jamtara has an average literacy rate of 63.73%, male literacy is 76.85%, and female literacy is 50.8%.

Tourism in Jamtara
Tourism in Jamtara includes many sightseeing places that are adorned with dense jungles, rivers and high cliffs. An ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Kali is located at a distance of few kilometres from Jamtara. This temple is visited by number of tourists every year. Situated in close proximity to Rajbari, there is a temple known as Raksha Kali Temple. Another prominent temple of Jamtara is Chanchala Mandir. Apart from this the Parwat Vihar Park is located 5 Kms away from Jamtara Railway Station. It is a favourite place for tourists visiting Jamtara. It is an attractive spot for the children. The sunrise and sunset from here is a charming scene. It is situated in the Northern Side of the Jamtara.
