Jagdish Singh is an Indian boxer born in the state of Haryana. He is the recipient of the prestigious Dronacharya Award.

Jagdish Singh, Indian BoxerJagdish Singh is an Indian boxer and a boxing coach from Bhiwani district of the Indian state of Haryana. He founded the Bhiwani Boxing Club (BBC) in 2001, which produced four members of the five member boxing team in Beijing Olympics 2008, including the bronze medal winner, Vijender Kumar. The acknowledgment for making into an elite boxing centre largely goes to an intrepid Sports Authority of India coach Jagdish Singh, who has been at the centre since 1996. He also received the highest sports honours for coaching in the year 2007- the Dronacharya Award.

Career of Jagdish Singh
He was an Indian boxer and represented his country at the highest level. He won many national and international awards during his playing days. Later on, after his retirement from competitive boxing he started coaching young and talented people and inspired many enthusiastic souls to take up boxing as a career. He produced, through his coaching centre, many talented boxers. In a country, which is so obsessed with cricket, to have been able to achieve that he achieved is indeed praiseworthy.

As a coach he is known for his traditional coaching methods and is quite popular among players. Since the inception of the boxing institute, more than 1000 have graduated from the institute and have won more than 161 medals at international arena and 312 national medals ranging in different competitions from world championship to Olympics. Presently there are 135 odd students who are being trained. He encourages his boys to fight without the chin guards which help them to get tougher and skilled.

Singh established the `Bhiwani Boxing Club` withdrawing his provident fund, mortgaging his home and land to obtain loan of 4 lakhs from Gramin bank. The boxing club has multi-utility gym, 25 metre track, three punching bags and a mobile boxing ring. Apparently the boxing centre may look very ordinary, but sheer dedication and determination from every one involved is what has made the academy the best in the country.

Previously Jagdish Singh visited schools and colleges for talent hunting. Now with popularity and awareness among people, aspirants from all over the country come here seeking admission. In order to remain in the academy, the incumbent has to show improvement in 3-4 months. Aspirants are judged by their will power, motor-ability and co-ordination. Training is for 5 days in a week and it starts early in the morning and ends only after sunsets.

Olympics 2008
In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, out of five Indian boxers, four were from his academy in Bhiwani, Haryana, named Bhiwani Boxing Club (BBC) in 2001. His ward include the three Indian boxer who have qualified for quarterfinals at Beijing viz. Akhil Kumar, Jitender Kumar and lastly Vijender Kumar, who eventually won a bronze medal at Beijing Olympics, India`s first Boxing medal in the Olympic Games.
