Jabalpur is considered as a historical city whose reference can be found in Mahabharata and Ramayana. In early India, it came in the direct rule of Mauryan Empire, which was proved in the Ashokan relics and later it became the vassal state under Guptas. After the downfall of Gupta Empire, Kalachuri Dynasty and Chalukyas began to rule. In medieval times, Gondwana rulers began to rule and later merged with Mughal Dynasty. In 18th Century, Marathas and British began to rule but for Anglo Maratha War, British took the direct control of Jabalpur and later merged with Agra Presidency.
