Initially, before the tournament, speculations were being made that other countries might be considered to host the tournament due to the Indian general elections. These speculations were put to rest when on 8th January, 2019; the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the entire tournament will be conducted in India.

And then there was the player auction which was held on 18th December, 2018 at Jaipur. Prominent cricketers like Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Glenn Maxwell and Jaydev Unadkat, the costliest Indian player in 2018 auction, were all released. The two most expensive Indian cricketers to be sold at the auction at 8.2 crore were Jaydev Unadkat and Varun Chakravarthy. And, Sam Curran from Kings XI Punjab was the most expensive international player to be sold at 7.2 crore.

The Chennai Super Kings were the defending champions of the title but on Indian Premier League 2019, they were defeated by the Mumbai Indians by 1 run. The final match was held in the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad and the 2019 Indian Premier League win was Mumbai Indians" 4th title. The player of the match was Jasprit Bumrah of Mumbai Indians.

Awards of Indian Premier League 2019
The winning team was Mumbai Indians but the Player of the Series was awarded to Andre Russell of the Kolkata Knight Riders, he had scored a total of 510 runs and took 11 wickets in the entire Twenty20 series. Shubman Gill also of Kolkata Knight Riders was named the Emerging Player of the tournament. The Orange Cap and the Purple Cap were won by David Warner of Surisers Hyderabad and Imran Tahir of Chennai Super Kings respectively. David Warner was the leading run- scorer of the tournament with 692 runs and Imran Tahir finished as the leading wicket taker with a total of 26 wickets.
