Development of Health Sector by Indian Physicians
With the development of medical institutions, the acute shortage of manpower in the healthcare sector was solved. Health care facilities by Indian physicians and personnel increased substantially between the early 1950s and early 1980s.
Primary health centres are the cornerstone of the rural health care system. By 1991, India had about 22,400 primary health centres, 11,200 hospitals, and 27,400 dispensaries; all served by competent Indian physicians. These amenities are part of a tiered health care system that funnels more difficult cases into urban hospitals. Primary health centres and sub- centres rely on trained Indian physicians to meet most of their needs.
