The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is the sixth member of the IIT fraternity and is an institute par excellence.

Indian Institute of Technology, GuwahatiThe Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) is an independent and residential institute imparting education and conducting research in science, engineering and technology. It is situated on the northern banks of the Brahmaputra and the tranquillity of the place provides the perfect ambience for academic pursuit.

Spread over an area of 3 square kilometres, the campus houses Academic complex, Administrative building, Central Library, Computer Centre and the Student Activity Centre. In the campus there is also the staff and residential buildings.

History of Inception
IIT Guwahati was established in 1994, by an Act of the Parliament while it started its academic session in 1995. It was actually a result of the 1985 Assam Accord signed between All Assam Students Union and the Government of India. It was set up with the aim of providing better educational facilities in Assam.

The aforementioned departments of the Institute offer B. Tech., B. Des., M. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D., M.A (Development Studies) and M.Sc. programmes.

IIT Guwahati was also the first IIT to introduce design as one of the disciplines at Undergraduate and Ph.D level. The Department of Design (DoD) at the institute awards the degree of B.Des. (Bachelor of Design),M.Des (Master of Design) & PhD on completion of the undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs respectively.

Currently there are around 2300 students enrolled, 215 faculty members and 300 support staff. Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Design, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Mathematics, Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Physics. Like the other IIT`s in the country, IIT Guwahati also provides for ultra modern equipments and state of the art technological facilities. There are several centres in the institute namely, Computer Centre, Centre for Educational Technology, Centre for Nanotechnology, Centre for Mass Media Communication, Central Instruments Facility Centre for Energy, and Centre for the Environment.

Other Activities in the Campus
Fests and sports meet make campus life in IIT Guwahati extremely exciting. The Science and technological festival is called Techniche while the cultural festival is called Alcheringa. Apart from these two festivals, the students have an intra- IIT, inter hostel cultural festival named Manthan. The annual sports meet is called Spirit where many colleges from northeast India participate.
