Indian Institute of Chemical Technology or IICT is a national-level research center under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It is located in Hyderabad, India. Spanning over more than six decades of its chequered history, the institute has made substantial contributions to Indian industry. It has filed one of the maximum CSIR patents.
History of Indian Institute of Chemical Technology
IICT was established in the year 1944. Back then, it was known as the Central Laboratories for Scientific and Industrial Research. Then in the year 1956, it came under the aegis CSIR, and was renamed Regional Research Laboratory, Hyderabad. It got its present name in the year 1989.
Research Areas of Indian Institute of Chemical Technology
The institute carries out research in basic and applied chemistry, biochemistry, bioinformatics and chemical engineering. Its research and development programmes concentrate on the development of technologies for pesticides, drugs, organic intermediates, fine chemicals, catalysts, polymers, organic coatings, use of low-grade coals, and value-added products from vegetable oils. Process design and mechanical engineering design form an integral part of technology development and transfer. In addition to these, IICT also provides science and technology inputs to the industrial and economic development of the country.
Works of Indian Institute of Chemical Technology
IICT has worked on the development of technology for accurate identification, of principal mosquito vector in rural endemic areas for designing suitable control measures of vector-borne diseases like malaria, filaria, Japanese encephalitis, dengue fever, etc. And it has successfully developed the user-friendly and menu-driven software for the classification and identification of the mosquito species from rural endemic areas. The package can be successfully used in mosquito control programs in rural areas. The salient features of this technology are its rapid identification and greater accuracy.
