The Indian team went to play the World Cup in a positive note and was also being considered as one of the top favourites for winning the championship. The team was in good form as well, as the team had performed quite well in its previous tournaments. The Indian team showed a wonderful performance in its tours to South Africa prior to the World Cup and that is why the cricket enthusiasts were quite upbeat about India`s success in the World Cup, 2007. The Indian team was placed in the Group B of ICC World Cup Cricket, 2007, along with the other teams like Bangladesh, Bermuda and Sri Lanka.

The Indian cricket team started its campaign in the ICC World Cup Cricket, 2007 with a disastrous defeat against one of the underdog teams of World Cricket, Bangladesh in the first group match. The match was held at Port of Spain on 17th March, 2007 and the Indian team batted first in the match, after winning the toss. Most of the Indian batsmen failed to play well in the match and as a result, India got all out for a small score of 191 runs. Only the opener, Saurav Ganguly, played well and scored 66 runs for India. After the poor performance of the batsmen, the Indian bowlers also failed to play well and they let the Bangladesh batsmen to achieve the target, without much difficulty. Bangladesh scored the required 192 runs from 48.3 overs by losing only 5 wickets and also clinched one of the best victories in their cricket history. Bangladesh also earned 2 points from the match, while India remained pointless.

After suffering a humiliating defeat against Bangladesh, the Indian team felt a huge pressure on their shoulders, as the Indian cricket enthusiasts did not take the defeat easily. India`s second match in ICC World Cup Cricket, 2007 was against the poorest team of the tournament, Bermuda and the Indian team wonderfully bounced back to form in this match. The match was played at Port of Spain on 19th March and the Indian batsmen showed one of the best batting performances in the history of World Cup, while batting first in this match. The star batsman, Virender Sehwag scored a brilliant century of 114 runs for India and Saurav Ganguly (89) and Yuvraj Singh (83) also played wonderfully for India. The Indian bowlers were also quite bolstered by the extraordinary performance of the Indian batsmen as they restricted the Bermuda innings to only 156 runs. The bowlers like Ajit Agarkar (3/38) and Anil Kumble (3/38) caused most of the damage to the Bermuda batting line-up and helped India clinch a huge victory of 257 runs in the match.

The third group match in the ICC World Cup Cricket, 2007 was a do-or-die match for India, as the team had to win against Sri Lanka in the match to get a promotion to the next level of the tournament. This match was also held at Port of Spain on 23rd March, 2007 and the Sri Lankan team scored 254 runs, while batting first in the match. The Indian bowlers failed to ball well in the match and as a result, Sri Lanka became successful to score the total that was considered to be a good total, considering the pitch of Port of Spain. The Indian cricket enthusiasts were eagerly praying so that the Indian batsmen could play well in their innings, however, their prayers went in vain. The Indian batsmen once again failed to play well and got all out for only 185 runs. Thus, Sri Lanka won the match with a comfortable margin of 69 runs and also earned 2 points, while India remained pointless in the match. That was the end of India`s campaign in the ICC World Cup Cricket, 2007 and it was undoubtedly one of the worst performances for India in World Cup.
