The town is just 12 Km away from its taluk headquarters Hungund. Ilkal is situated 585 meters above sea level. Ilkal is famous for its hand woven sarees commonly known as "Ilkal Sarees". Ilkal is also the source of red granite stone which is exported to various places. The place is important hub for trade, commerce and industry.

Demography of Ilkal
The India census report published in 2001 states that Ilkal had a population of 51,956. Males constitute 51 percent of the population and females account for 49 percent of the population. In Ilkal, 14 percent of the population are less than 6 years of age. The literacy rate of Ilkal is 62 percent which is higher than the national average literacy rate of 59.5 percent. Out of it, the male literacy rate is 72 percent and the female literacy rate is 52 percent.

Temples in Ilkal
Ilkal has a large temple of Vijayamahanteshaswami and his religious preceptor Gurumahanta Shivayogishwara. The monument of Hazarath Syed Murtaza-Sha-Khadri lies on the eastern side of the town.
