Sir Hormasji Pherozshah Modi is in general known as Sir Homi Modi. He was a well-known Parsi businessman who associated with the Tata Group and become an administrator of India. He was a member of Indian Legislative Assembly for 14 years from 1929 to 1943. He was assigned as the member for Supply in the Viceroy"s Executive Council. Homi Modi was also selected as the member of Constituent Assembly of India. A road in Mumbai is named after him as "Sir Homi Modi Street".
Early Life of Homi Modi
Homi Modi was born on 23rd September 1881.He graduated from the prestigious St. Xavier"s College in Mumbai. He also obtained the Masters Degree and a degree in Law. In 1929, he was selected as the member of First Round Table Conference in 1929.
Career of Homi Modi
Homi Modi started his career as a lawyer in Mumbai. In 1913, he became the Chairman of Bombay Municipal Corporation. In 1920, he joined business and became a member of Textile Mill Owners` Association of which he became the Chairman in 1927. He joined Tata Group as the Director in 1939 and served till 1959. He also served as a director in different companies like ACC, Tata Hydro and Indian Hotels.
Homi Modi was the Director of Central Bank of India till 1968. He, with the other leaders like Pranlal Devkaran Nanjee played a crucial job in the arrangement of Indian Banks` Association. It came into existence on 26th September 1946. After independence of India, he was appointed as the Governor of United Provinces and Uttar Pradesh for the years 1949 to 1952. He wrote a number of books including like "The Political Future of India", "Reflections", "Biography of Feroz Shah MehtaWise" and Otherwise.
Personal Life of Homi Modi
Homi Modi was the father of Russi Modi, Piloo Modi and Kali Modi. He died on 9 March 1969, aged 87.
